Managing The Property : Home Health and Safety

Emergency Response checklist The following checklist may help you in developing an emergency plan for your family to follow in any disaster. Do you have a home emergency plan?

___Do you have an emergency safety kit? Is it located near an exit?

Following is a list from FEMA for a disaster supplies kit:

___A three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and food that won't spoil.

___One change of clothing and footwear per person, and one blanket or sleeping bag per person.

___A first aid kit that includes your family's prescription medications.

___Emergency tools including a battery-powered radio, LED flashlight, and plenty of extra batteries.

___An extra set of car keys and a credit card, cash or traveler's checks.

___Sanitation supplies.

___Special items for infant, elderly, or disabled family members.

___An extra pair of glasses.

___Keep important family documents in a waterproof container. Keep a smaller kit in the trunk of your car.

___Can each member of your family tell you two ways out of your home? If your second way out of a two-story home is a window, do you need a safety ladder? If you live in a high-rise, does your family know--and practice--two ways out of the building? (Remember that an elevator is never a way out during a fire.)

___ Can all the locks, windows and doors be opened from the inside by everyone?

___ Does your family understand to leave or seek shelter when an alarm sounds?

___Does everyone have an agreed upon meeting place?

___ Keep your cell phone fully charged

___ Does each member of your family know who to call for help and are the telephone numbers posted?

___ In a community wide emergency, does your family know where to seek shelter?

___ Smoke detectors are essential. Are the batteries routinely replaced?

___ Do you have a fire extinguisher? Do you have it inspected?

___ Sniff for gas leaks, starting at the water heater. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, turn off the main gas valve, open windows, and get everyone outside quickly.

___ Shut off any other damaged utilities. (You will need a professional to turn gas back on.)

___ Do you maintain waterproof tarps or plywood to cover openings created by a storm or fire?

___ Do you have the appropriate disaster Insurances?

___ Do you have a written inventory and photographs of all valuable items in your home? Do you have more than one copy located outside of your home?
