Contact
all utilities and give them a forwarding address for any pro-rated refunds. Dont forget to tell them when to cut the service
Notify utilities in your new home state with your arrival date, you want to arrive with heat and light. Dont forget DSL or cable
companies.
Ask your Doctor or provider for a good refferal. Consider
having your records transferred before you arrive.
In an emergency the new Doctors will have your medical information.
Open new bank accounts or arrange for transfer of your current accounts and order new checks. Shred your old checks.
Register children for school and ask for school records to be transferred.
Advise the post office of change of address and date of move. You can pick up a slip at the post office
Check your homeowner's insurance and make arrangements to transfer or cancel coverage.
If you are moving to a new state, see if you will need new car insurance.
Coordinate with the movers and be there when they arrive

your valuables during your move. Use a paper inventory of all valuable
items then use it to help you account for all of your belongings.
Take
digital photos and save to a CD, Keep all receipts with this for insurance purposes.
Take a count of all boxes to be shipped. The Insurance Information
Institute offers a free home inventory software download at www.knowyourstuff.org/ We have not used this but you may choose
to.
Packing
Hire a professional packer recommended your by insurance company or moving company to do the packing. You may have trouble with
coverage for any damages that were not packed by a professional.
If you must pack some items:
Keep it light.
Put heavy items in smaller boxes, you dont want to be carrying heavy items so large that
you cant grip well.
Use lots of bubble wrap for collectables and other fragile items. Its a lot cheaper than losing an irreplacable momento and pack the light items in
bigger boxes.
Mark your boxes by room and/or
Color code boxes, using a sharpie, with a color for each
room on all four sides. Mark "This side up" with an arrow, clearly
Mark boxed breakables in big letters "
fragile" on all four sides.
