Some Essentials:
  • Hire a reputable mover. Check with the Better Business Bureau, get estimates, buy moving insurance and use referrals.
  • Be sure to check the Movers License to see if they are reputable
  • Contact all utilities and give them a forwarding address for any pro-rated refunds. Dont forget to tell them when to cut the service
  • Notify utilities in your new home state with your arrival date, you want to arrive with heat and light. Dont forget DSL or cable companies.
  • Ask your Doctor or provider for a good refferal. Consider having your records transferred before you arrive. In an emergency the new Doctors will have your medical information.
  • Open new bank accounts or arrange for transfer of your current accounts and order new checks. Shred your old checks.
  • Register children for school and ask for school records to be transferred.
  • Advise the post office of change of address and date of move. You can pick up a slip at the post office
  • Check your homeowner's insurance and make arrangements to transfer or cancel coverage.
  • If you are moving to a new state, see if you will need new car insurance.
  • Coordinate with the movers and be there when they arrive
  • Home Inventory Software
  • Help protect your valuables during your move. Use a paper inventory of all valuable items then use it to help you account for all of your belongings.
  • Take digital photos and save to a CD, Keep all receipts with this for insurance purposes. Take a count of all boxes to be shipped. The Insurance Information Institute offers a free home inventory software download at www.knowyourstuff.org/  We have not used this but you may choose to.
Packing
  • Hire a professional packer recommended your by insurance company or moving company to do the packing. You may have trouble with coverage for any damages that were not packed by a professional.
If you must pack some items:
  • Keep it light.
  • Put heavy items in smaller boxes, you dont want to be carrying heavy items so large that you cant grip well.
  • Use lots of bubble wrap for collectables and other fragile items. Its a lot cheaper than losing an irreplacable momento and pack the light items in bigger boxes.
  • Mark your boxes by room and/or
  • Color code boxes, using a sharpie, with a color for each room on all four sides. Mark "This side up"  with an arrow, clearly
  • Mark boxed breakables in big letters " fragile" on all four sides.
